While a viable technology, NFC has yet to gain widespread acceptance (due to privacy issues / lack of manufacturer focus and commercial acceptance, etc. amongst other factors) Apple’s iBeacon and iWallet look to be the firm’s attempt at both usurping NFC as well as pushing their proprietary virtual payment standard. Lost in all of this is how Cupertino (akin to Redmond) is going the exact same route: end-to-end control of any given end-user’s experience (and, nobody seems to be raising as much fuss about it as the DOJ did in the mid-1990’s – at least at this juncture…)
