Dr. Feel Good.

Leaving aside the latest corporate (lawsuit) litigation and/or the most recent ‘lost’ smartphone drama (diversion?); some iPhone users are pushing the boundaries of their handset by utilizing it to create art (on-the-go).

Giving Back (It All Matters).

Much has; is and in all probability will continue to be written about Steve Jobs (including a letter written by none other than Bono to the NY Times) regarding his philanthropical efforts on fighting AIDS via the firm’s special edition iPods / association with (Project) RED (founded by Bono himself).

Whatever the case may be; there is A LOT that technology can do to assist people with leading a better quality of life (that economic-determinism far too often stands in the way of as profits tend to overwhelmingly hold sway).

The Third Rail?

If the enclosed perspective has any merit; Redmond’s ability to ‘get back into the (U.S.) Smartphone game’ is a long-shot at best (which really shouldn’t come as any surprise for a number of reasons including the simple reality that a handset is not the desktop!)

It’s About Time…

Well, perhaps it is actually LONG past time that the (U.S.) Federal Government – finally – decided to stand-up and look after the average consumer (regarding the proposed AT&T / T-Mobile merger). Conversely, it might also be the case that their (supposed) attempt to block this deal will amount to nothing more than political grandstanding?

Turning Japanese.

While Sony has fallen on fairly challenging times over the past several years – one big hit could turn the firm’s fortunes around (seemingly overnight). And; if their head-mounted; 1280 by 720 pixels; 5.1 virtual surround sound; HDMI out headset / visor (set to debut in Japanese late this year) catch on… a lot could change for both the company (as well as the application of this technology ranging from gaming to movies to education, etc.) within relatively short-order.

They Want It Back!

Citing an (IP) Intellectual Property infringement (aside from the roughly $70,000 bidding price prior to a cease-and-desist order that halted the auction of it on eBay… which had to garner someone’s attention internally) Apple has demanded that a MacBook 3G prototype (from 2007) be returned to the company.

Long story short: such a frenzy certainly puts the ‘Fan’ into ‘Boy’ as the die-hard Apple legions are obviously a unique bunch indeed!

Manufacturing: The Next Frontier?

In light of all the buzz surrounding Amazon’s pending Tablet launch; HP’s TouchPad demise; this market segment in general (including some of the inaccurate predictions that have been put forth) Apple’s iPad just keeps blazing new trails as manufacturing looks to be the next area it’ll make an impact.

A lot could be stated / written about said space; however, two areas where real-world demand might result in the next generation iPad seeing some design changes could be in the application / usage of NFC and RFID (which, by extension, would be a big coup for both of these technologies in and as far as potentially expanding their commercial potential).

In This Corner…

Up Next: Amazon’s long-rumored Tablet is (supposedly) set to debut. Towards that end; the company has a couple of distinct advantages (unlike the majority of their competition) in and as far as: 1) their distribution channel, and: two) the content that they’re able to provide therein. Conversely, the biggest variables for the company to contend with are / will be: a) features / functionality, and: b) the availability of third-party applications.

All told, this pending launch is akin to the digital locker (e.g., cloud-storage) that they launched last year. In other words… the company is not going to back down from any challenge (most notably regarding Apple) which should ultimately benefit both consumers and (let’s hope) product innovation.

The Price Was (Just) Wrong?

If pricing were the only variable regarding the how and why of HP’s TouchPad being such a failure wouldn’t other ‘me too’ vendors within this space be following suit?

Clearly; more than just what the firm charged was an issue at-hand here… The availability of third-party applications; how it was marketed; network / carrier plans; a growing list of knock-off entrants; the iPad’s overall popularity, etc. are / were also major factors that negatively impacted this product’s short-lived life-cycle.

Granted, the TouchPad did generate a lot of buzz; however, it was only when said product was deeply discounted… which hardly warrants it being considered a worthy opponent!

A Threshold Passed.

With over 1/2 of Americans now using (some sort of) social networking perhaps it is also inevitable that another research poll / project is soon to follow regarding how said use is impacting (work) productivity (be it negativity and/or positively?)
