Leading With Their Chin!

RIM’s latest blow comes in the form of losing a patent lawsuit regarding infringing on another firm’s remote management system for wireless devices. Towards that end, while the company is reportedly sitting on $2 billion in cash, a $147 million legal settlement could not have come at a worse time. In sum, this just adds insult to injury (regarding their current woes) aside from the negative PR and compounding the piling on effect on (what has to be) an already demoralized workforce. They’re clearly not catching a break and seem to be on a very short-leash for turning their fortunes around (if that’s even possible at this juncture?)

Can You Digg It.

In the ashes of one of the Internet’s (2.0) most spectacular crashes, Digg’s remaining IP was sold-off today. Be advised: a bloated staff; hubris / arrogance and the inability to match their competition drove this firm’s demise… and, this can happen to any given company.

NYC: Pay-phone = Wi-Fi Hotspots!

Retrofitting New York’s roughly 14,000 public pay-phones is not just a brilliant idea but a fantastic method for repurposing existing telephony infrastructure. Towards that end, if they’ll able to pull this off – just think about how many global pay-phones might also be converted. Go NYC Go!

How Big Will This Launch Be?

With the latest iPad set to launch on 7/20 in the PRC; the question isn’t whether or not consumers will be ready there or not. The relevant questions are: will supply meet demand? And/or, how many PRC consumers have already purchased one on the grey-market?

Is Cost-cutting Enough?

Be it selling corporate assets or laying off staff – these are just stopgap measures. What’ll turn RIM’s fortunes around is a bonafide hit (which unfortunately / currently just seems highly unlikely).

Vital Signs?

If the enclosed report is true and RIM’s Board / CEO, etc. are sued by their shareholders regarding claims of “knowing and willful misrepresentation” it won’t necessarily be the ultimate death knell. However, what it will most likely signify is more internal power-struggles and paralysis both of which are challenging enough for a healthy company let alone one that’s lost 95% off their peak (since mid-2008). Ouch!

NFC: Never Freaking Coming?

Supposedly by Google debuting their Mobile Wallet first; Apple allows another company to conduct their global market research (thereby permitting the firm to learn / capitalize on another’s mistake).

Kiss and Make-up.

In an about-face, Facebook and Yahoo called off what looked to be a nasty legal battle… and, wound-up ending their legal wrangling in a partnership… If Yahoo could actually produce an innovation, breakthrough and/or some other significant development versus the on-going missteps and stumbles that they’ve had for how many years now that would almost seem surreal at this point in the firm’s slow self-implosion…

Again?

Long on rumors… short on details… Yet, if the on-and-off reports are true, Amazon appears to be developing their own Smartphone. Unlike the rumored Mozilla phone (based upon a browser) that seems far-fetched at best. Or, Facebook’s handset (perhaps more viable but Social Networking doesn’t seem compelling enough to produce a Smartphone either)… As far as Amazon – that’s a different issue due to their rich and robust media offerings; Cloud, potential Kindle integration, global presence, etc.
